Moose Newfoundland

Image block

The swampy bogs and tundra of this large island off the mainland Canada coast is home to the largest concentration of Canada Moose in the world. This family owned and operated outfitter has been guiding successful archery and rifle Moose clients for many years. Many of the guides have been working and hunting the same area for over 15 years. The genetics and age structure in this area produces larger than average bulls for Newfoundland. The outfitter only utilizes two different fly in camps that are located in an ecological reserve, far from any road. Both lodges have many modern conveniences of home such as hot and cold running water, showers, generator electricity, and satellite telephone. Each of them are heated by wood stoves which makes the task of drying clothing and boots much easier. Camps are typically limited to only accommodate 2-4 hunters at a time. Hunts are guided 2x1 or 1x1.

Spot and stalk and calling are the preferred methods of hunting Moose on the island. The high density of Moose can make a really exciting hunt during the rut which starts in late September and goes throughout the month of October. Early September offers a chance for bowhunters to hunt bachelor grouped bulls. The general season allows the hunter to choose archery, rifle or muzzleloader as a weapon. Both the early archery season and rifle season offer a combined 85-95% success rate annually.

Hunts include accommodations for seven nights and six days of hunting: all meals included at camp, lunches for hunting, ground transportation to and from airport, bush plane flights to and from camp, animal cleaning and quartering in field, trophy preparation, flying out of meat and trophies, and transportation of meat to the butcher. You can add Woodland Caribou and Black Bear to your adventure at a very reasonable fee if tags are available.

Newfoundland is a popular destination for hunters located in the northeastern United States. Due to the islands close proximity to the Maine border you will have the option to travel by vehicle. Driving can help save money on travel expenses, meat shipping, and butchering. You will need to take a ferry onto the island but the outfitter will arrange parking and transportation to camp.

Testimonials

“I booked my first major hunt with OAS and ended up taking a 55" bull moose in Newfoundland! I have since gone on 3-4 trips a year that Chris has arranged for me and I have yet to be disappointed. Chris always works hard to send me on hunts that have been very successful, and does so to accommodate my busy schedule and budgets. I am grateful to OAS for the many great hunts and memories!”
